From Ennenda the Aeugsten gondola glides up to Bärenboden, a favourite outing for the people of Glarus. In summer they like to stroll on to the little Fessis lakes for a swim (provided there is enough water). We are more likely to find the last of the snow, so the bathing party will probably be small.
After 1,000 metres of ascent we reach the Gufelstock, with a view all round – including the route ahead. Up and down, up and down: the Höch, the Chli Höch, the Heustock and the Schwarzstöckli line up in front of us. At one point the path narrows, which is why the route is graded T4 as an alpine trail.
From the Rotärd (the earth there really is very red), we descend almost 800 metres back to Bärenboden and the gondola. It is a long day – and a memorable one, for more than that reason alone.
