The gondola lifts us to the Schwänzelegg, at almost 1,800 metres. Here we strap on our snowshoes and follow the contour line around the Furner Berg. Then the plateau opens up, stretching a long way towards the Wannaspitz, dotted with mountain pines and crossed now and then by animal tracks.

After about 4km begins the short climb of 250 metres to the Wannaspitz. Well-placed zigzags make it easy work. From the top there is a fine panorama of the Weissfluh and Sulzfluh, the Calanda above Haldenstein, and down into the Rhine and Landwasser valleys.

We take our time on the descent to Hinterberg – it is, after all, 550 metres. From there a bus takes us down to Jenaz, where we catch the train home.
