We are properly in the Alps here: the walk starts at Klausenpass-Balm, at 1,800 metres, and once we have climbed to the Ruosalper Chulm we are at almost 2,200 metres. That is most of the climbing done, because from here it is downhill. Poles are useful, though it never gets very steep.

At Unter Stafel we may be able to buy cheese, if someone is free to sell it. Half an hour later the Waldisee invites us in for a swim – so pack your swimming things if you fancy it.

We cannot pass up a visit to the Waldi-Ranch alp restaurant, for a refreshing drink and, above all, its many treats, most of them home-made. Thus fortified, we are ready for the remaining descent of a good 300 metres.
